CUBIERTA

The brief for the market roof project was a challenge to span different amounts of space in a variety of manners with different heights, structures and programs. The site was a huge dissused space bordering a super market, in the industrial areas towards Badalona (outside Barcelona).

My proposal to this technical challenge was to creat units which could all work together to provide all the different requests of the challenge. Units which could be able to constantly change to suite the conditions, such as the heights, the rain cover, the light and the physical needs of the users. The units (tabs) are organised about the site to create a program of diversity with passages and outdoor spaces. Much of the control of the units is in the hands of the marketers who work in the spaces.

The tabs are held by large concrete stubs which contain the mechanisms for moving the structure and its louvres. This monouverablity helps to achieve the feel of a more open air market, but always with cover. Spaces within the market are landscaped with planting themes, creating “stopping places” within, the idea of the spaces, is that they are tohave a general rythym and order; but at the same time, its a series of clusters, always changing ,always reflecting its use.
