ENCLOSURE

The Brief was to design an enclosure for two clients to sleep in at whitstable beach. Whitstable beach is a cobbled beach lined with groins which act as sea defenses. Our two clients requested a design which incorporates comfort, privacy and views to the dramatic sunsets which the beach has to offer. The design takes advantage of the steep groins present on the beach, it hangs from them with ropes tied around the groins. This positioning meant that the clients had privacy from the most inhabited parts of the beach, and were elevated from the quite unpleasant sea-weed littered ground. The structure works quite like a hammock, the occupants weight is evenly distributed through the strong carpet base, which is held together by the bamboo mainframe, which then transfers the weight through tension in the ropes. The even distribution of weight and the soft natural textures of the materials, make the enclosure feel comfortable. It is entered at the back at near ground level for ease of access, and there are openings at the front which give views to the west side of the beach taking advantage of the beautiful sunsets.
